If your vision is not perfect but can be corrected with a mild prescription you might need an enhancement or touch-up to maximize your vision. The larger the prescription the greater the chance that you will need a touch-up. Enhancements are much, more common with far-sightness (hyperopia) than with myopia (near-sightness). Enhancements are relatively common with astigmatism especially associated with far-sightness. Most regression (change in vision) occurs within the first two weeks and is stabilized by 3 mos. We like to perform enhancements if needed between 3 and 6 mos. from the time of your original procedure. During this period, we can use the original flap. The procedure is easier and faster than the original procedure. You will use the same drops with the same precautions as in the original procedure. Enhancements often have more irritation during the first day, but have a speedy recovery, i.e. by the second day the eyes see very well and are comfortable. There are less symptoms of dry eye, glare, or blurred vision. Remember, LASIK does not stop the eyes from becoming myopic if that is what they were going to do. If you have a strong possibility of developing myopia due to your environment, near glasses should be used to slow the progression of myopia. |
